The Academy is Auckland's only dedicated art-house cinema

The Academy is just a lovely cinema... every pore of the Academy oozes film lover... it is one of the most comfortable cinemas... and you can get wine, it's great!

We Love Movies

Auckland's underground movie theatre

''As a welcome change from mainstream Hollywood blockbusters, Academy, tucked away under the Auckland Central Library, offers a great selection of American indie, foreign and documentary films. The cinema boasts two screens and a small boutique cinema of 16 seats. The 16 seater is a very intimate venue and feels like someone has built a little gem under a flight of stairs in an old Victorian mansion.

With a neat selection of vintage film memorabilia in the foyer and a dangerous array of Kapiti ice cream tubs, you won’t be left bored or hungry. Yet perhaps the best part is the crowd this theatre attracts. From hipsters to deep and meaningful cinema goers, the patrons who attend all have a general love and enthusiasm for film.

The main draw card is the five dollar Wednesdays. You can literally see any movie, any session for only five dollars whether you’re an adult, student, senior or child.

Academy occasionally hosts special screenings and events and takes part in some of the major film festivals to visit New Zealand, which is always good to know for those film fanatics living or staying in the city.'' - neatplaces.co.nz

At the Academy you will find a range of the best local and international films. All served to you while you enjoy chilled Stoke craft beer, organic juices, boutique wines, outstanding Kokako Coffee and Kapiti Ice cream. Relax and enjoy a drink or browse our wide selection of arthouse DVDs for sale, while awaiting the start of your movie.

We ask that you please refrain from bringing food or beverages from outside the venue into our theatres.

The event ran smoothly and without a hitch and I would definitely consider hosting a private screening at the Academy in future. - Sarah Phillipps, Epicure Marketing & PR

They offer consistently fantastic service both administering our events and hosting us on the nights of our sessions. It has been a pleasure working with them to date, and we will continue to do so into the future” - Shane Appleton, Project Co-Ordinator , “Fonterra,  Auckland Social Club”.

I thought the facilities (lobby, bar, cinema etc) were very comfortable and the service was excellent. I would gladly recommend them.. - Anoushka Klaus, Producer/Actress

We love the Academy Cinemas! Recently refurbished and set up for screenings in the latest digital formats, the main cinema also has a new sound system, so we can be sure we’re offering our members the best possible big-screen viewing experience. The central city location, right next to the public library, with plenty of car parking and public transport options, is another big plus. Best of all are the people – the friendly, professional Academy staff are so enthusiastic and helpful, they make our weekly screenings a breeze.  Auckland Film Society
