About Us

  • “The Academy is just a lovely cinema … every pore of the Academy oozes film lover … it is one of the most comfortable cinemas … and you can get wine, it’s great.’ - Fabian Fanboy, bFM

    Auckland’s only dedicated art-house cinema.

We love movies, and we pride ourselves on finding and delivering you the highest quality and most entertaining films from outside the Hollywood studio system.

Started by John and Heather Hart in 1982, the Academy has always broken new ground in providing the public with films they wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to see. Current operators John Davies and Gina Dellabarca continue this tradition, adding their enthusiasm for local Kiwi films to the traditional support of foreign indie movies.

At the Academy you will find a range of the best local and international films, documentaries, romantic comedies, dramas and thrillers. All served to you in the comfort of wide seats, with wine holders so you can enjoy a drink or sweet treat during your movie. In the foyer we play ambient tunes and serve chilled beer and boutique wines, as well as making fresh organic fair-trade coffee. Relax and enjoy flipping through one of a huge range of magazines we provide for our customers’ enjoyment, while awaiting the start of your movie.

Sample some diversity at some of the festivals we regularly play host to, such as the International Film Festival, the World Cinema Showcase, the Human Rights Film Festival, the JASMAX Architectural Film Festival, DOCNZ Documentary Film festival and the Show Me Shorts Film festival.

  • Parking

Parking is ample and easy at the Academy with a multitude of parking buildings within easy strolling distance. The Civic is probably the closest. There is also plenty of street parking in the streets around the cinema, which is free after 6pm.

  • Disabled Access

There are disabled parking spaces outside the cinema in Lorne Street. During Library hours access is available to the cinema via the Library lift. Just ask at their reception for a security guard to bring you down and you don't need an escort to leave after your film. Outside of Library hours we need 45 minutes notice to book a security guard to escort you via the lift, so please call us on 09 373 2761 so we can book this service for you. Library hours are 9:30am-8pm Mon-Fri, 10am-4pm Sat & 12pm-4pm Sun.

  • Bookings

Unlike the multiplexes we are happy to take bookings so you can be sure to get a seat at the film of your choice. Call us on 09 373 2761 to reserve your tickets today. Booked tickets need to be collected at least 15 minutes before the start of the film. We do not usually allocate seats in the large Academy cinema, but usually do in the Encore cinema. Films playing in the Encore Cinema are marked with an asterix in all our advertising to let you know we recommend booking as these sessions are more likely to sell out.

  • Gift Vouchers & DVDs

Movie tickets and DVDs make excellent gifts for friends, family, colleagues or as a treat for yourself. These are available from the box office during opening hours. Movie gift vouchers are $14 each and the DVD prices start at around $25.

  • Cinema Hire

We regularly host private parties, fund-raisers and corporate events in both the Academy and Encore cinemas. Hiring a cinema will also give you space in our foyer for pre or post-movie drinks and snacks. We have the most versatile projection equipment in the city and can assist you in finding a relevant film. Download the booklet about hiring the cinema which will answer most of your questions and then contact John on john@academycinemas.co.nz to find out what dates are available.
