'Our First Immigrants' is a documentary about the first generation of Korean immigrants in New Zealand.

This 20-minute-long film consists of interviews from 10 Koreans who set foot in New Zealand in the 1970s who show us precious photographs and other keepsakes they have kept for over 40 years.
These first-generation Korean immigrants describe their reasons for immigrating to New Zealand, their personal circumstances at the time, their experiences when settling, and their advice for the future generation.
This film was originally intended to show the first page of the Korean community’s history here in New Zealand to both the next generation and the local Kiwis by capturing the voices of the first Korean settlers who are gradually disappearing around us.

In the 1970s, when New Zealand's immigration door was still closed, only a handful of Koreans, including students who received Colombo Plan Scholarship were invited to come by the New Zealand Government and were able to settle down in New Zealand.
The first generation of immigrants raised their children in one of the best countries in the world. Thanks to New Zealand's economic affluence, stable social system, and welfare system.
But, they had to settle down in a very different social environment from Korea, often suffering from culture shock.

“I hope this documentary helps the 1.5 and 2nd generation Koreans in New Zealand understand the lives of these first immigrants and to help them think about their roots. Also, to help local Kiwis in understanding the Korean community, and New Zealand’s Korean history.” (Director Joonseob Yi)
