OPENING NIGHT FILM
Shy and impressionable Pinky strikes up a friendship with her fellow nurse Thoroughly Modern Millie. As the two spend more time together Pinky becomes dependent on Millie, adopting aspects of her personality and appearance. Things take an unusual and darker turn as Pinky discovers Millie with a man, a local bar owner whose wife forms the third of the title’s three women.
Curator’s Note: Very few directors can make overt, sustained ambiguity so compelling as Altman does in 3 Women, famously conceived from a dream the director had. Part of its mysterious pleasure derives from the closely-observed interactions between Sissy Spacek and Shelley Duvall, especially the surprising and increasingly unnerving changes that occur between them. Also vital for its amorphous impact is its visual lyricism, with the purgatorial Californian desert-scape, the distorting motif of water, and the strangely violent alien murals by Bodhi Wind, all of which are put to fantastic use by cinematographer Chuck Roscher.
