''The Academy is just a lovely cinema... every pore of the Academy oozes film lover... it is one of the most comfortable cinemas... and you can get wine, it's great!'' - Fabian Fanboy, bFM
As a welcome change from mainstream Hollywood blockbusters, Academy, tucked away under the Auckland Central Library, offers a great selection of American indie, foreign and documentary films. The 16 seater is a very intimate venue and feels like someone has built a little gem under a flight of stairs in an old Victorian mansion.
With a neat selection of vintage film memorabilia in the foyer and a dangerous array of Kapiti ice cream tubs, you won’t be left bored or hungry. Yet perhaps the best part is the crowd this theatre attracts. From hipsters to deep and meaningful cinema goers, the patrons who attend all have a general love and enthusiasm for film.
The main draw card is the five dollar Wednesdays. You can literally see any movie, any session for only five dollars whether you’re an adult, student, senior or child.
Academy occasionally hosts special screenings and events and takes part in some of the major film festivals to visit New Zealand, which is always good to know for those film fanatics living or staying in the city.'' - neatplaces.co.nz
At the Academy, you will find a range of the best local and international films. Relax and enjoy a drink — or browse our wide selection of arthouse DVDs for sale — while awaiting the start of your movie.
We ask that you please refrain from bringing food or beverages from outside the venue into our theatres.

Academy Cinemas prides itself in playing avant-garde, historically significant, boundary-breaking films as part of our programme of independent, arthouse and classic films. We respect the wide, differing views of what film viewers consider good taste or objectionable and also respect their right to disagree with programming decisions. We believe that films are complex, collectively-made efforts and not fully representative of any one country, company, person or film movement involved and would be unfair to represent the film as such. Screenings of particular films should not be taken as an endorsement of any one country, company, person, film movement, or act committed in the film. All films screened at Academy have been passed by the appropriate New Zealand ratings & classifications authorities as fit for theatrical viewing, and rating classification information for films screening at Academy will be available in our lobby and on our website.
